The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of the Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews sold at Walmart due to undeclared allergens. The 8.25 oz cans, distributed by John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. (JBSS), are being recalled because they may contain undeclared coconut and milk, posing serious risks to individuals with allergies.

Washington state was not mentioned as one of the locations affected by the recall of Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews. The recall notice listed 30 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, and others, but Washington was not included in the list of states where the recalled product was distributed. Therefore, it appears the recall did not impact Walmart stores in Washington state.

Product Identification

The recalled product is identifiable by its plastic can with a blue wrap-around label, bearing a “best used by” date of July 8, 2025, and a UPC of 078742133348. The issue came to light following a consumer report of coconut cashews found in a can labeled as honey-roasted cashews. An investigation confirmed that several coconut cashew cans were mistakenly labeled as honey-roasted.

Distribution and Consumer Action

The affected cashews were sold in select Walmart stores across 30 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, and others, and also online via Walmart's website. Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to consume it and to return it to Walmart for a full refund.

Health Risks and Statistics

No adverse reactions have been reported to date, but the presence of undeclared milk and coconut can cause serious or life-threatening allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Food allergies are a significant health concern in the U.S., with millions affected each year. The recall underscores the importance of accurate labeling to prevent potential health hazards.

Company and Regulatory Response

JBSS and Walmart have acted swiftly to remove the impacted product from shelves and online listings to prevent further risk. The FDA continues to monitor the situation and advises consumers to check their products and heed the recall to ensure safety.

This comprehensive recall effort reflects the ongoing commitment of manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory bodies to safeguard consumer health, particularly in addressing the challenges of food allergen management.

Industry Impact and Consumer Safety

The recall of Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews has prompted a broader discussion in the food industry about the need for stringent quality control and accurate labeling practices. Food manufacturers are now reassessing their production and labeling processes to prevent similar incidents.

This event highlights the critical importance of transparency and responsibility in the food supply chain, ensuring that consumer safety remains a top priority. Industry experts are calling for enhanced regulatory standards and improved allergen management protocols to prevent cross-contamination and mislabeling.

Public Awareness and Education

In response to the recall, there has been a surge in public awareness campaigns about the risks associated with food allergens. Health organizations and consumer advocacy groups are working to educate the public on the importance of reading labels carefully and understanding the potential health risks of allergens.

These efforts aim to empower consumers with the knowledge to make safer food choices and advocate for clearer, more informative labeling on food products, ultimately fostering a safer food environment for everyone, especially those with severe allergies.
